Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around for decades. Also known as machine intelligence or machine learning, it involves building computers and machines that can “learn” and make decisions like humans. We have seen significant strides in AI applications and use, so much so that it is part of our everyday life. From personal assistants on our mobile devices to web browsing; even our preferences on movies and music are used to tailor playlists and radio stations to our tastes. AI has also made its way into the business world with new tools for use in the recruiting and selection process used by many organizations.
How is it Used?
While there are several reasons companies use technology and AI as part of their recruitment process, the main reason is that it saves recruiters and hiring managers time. There are often dozens, if not hundreds, of applicants for a single job. AI tools scan resumes and applications to identify those that closely align with the job description and qualifications. The more information you have in your resume that matches the job posting, the more likely it is that your resume will pass the AI screening. For this reason, it’s essential to know what keywords to include. These keywords should be relevant to your job function or industry. To ensure you have popular keywords and content, look to the information contained in job postings and ads.
In addition to keyword searches, companies use prescreening questions in their online applications. The responses to these questions also aid the system in ranking applications. As a job seeker, it is essential to be candid about your skills when responding. Interviewers tailor these questions to match each position. Misrepresenting your experience can put you in a situation in which you are interviewing for or being asked to perform a job for which you are not qualified.
How to Work with AI?
If you are a job seeker, you will want to make sure you have a resume that is “AI-ready.” An applicant tracking system, a tool used when you are applying online for a job, is reading and scanning your information and populating a database. Photos, multiple fonts, tables, charts, and graphs are not easily read and often lead to systems misreading or confusing your information. Don’t worry; you don’t have to throw out your unique resume! Those can still be used for networking or during an interview. A “traditional” resume, with the same information, can be used for online applications. Also, a super-secret trick you can use with your traditional resume is to include extra keywords in white font. This can boost your application’s ranking within an applicant tracking system!
As technologies continue to advance, the use of AI in the recruiting and selection process will see much more widespread use. Because recruiting and hiring is a people-based activity, AI is not likely to replace Human Resources. Companies will leverage the use of systems to help their HR departments find top talent while reducing the time it takes to get people hired.
